The Pirate’s Dilemma
I didn’t really start reading until my 3rd year of business school, and I kinda wish I started sooner. Books have now become my go-to for inspiration. They’re kind of like music in that they have the power to change the way you think, feel and view the world. Just like a jazzy groove tune can chill you out or a funky drumline can hype you up, a book can drive your imagination or set off an epiphany. For me, I like to find books that stimulate thought and provide me with some new perspective. I picked up my latest read, “The Pirates Dilemma” from a close friend of mine and it definitely hit me with some inspiration.

“The Pirates Dilemma” takes a look at things like how hip hop culture and 20th Century Fox are similar. What do one of the most popular subcultures on Earth and one of the largest film companies in the World have in common? They were both founded by pirates. The book takes you through youth movements in music, film, fashion, art, and technology and how pirates have pushed cultural boundaries and defied laws to shape the society we live in today. Like those who created hip hop, pirates and pioneers are often unaware of the effects they will have on the world years later. So what are major corporations to do when these pirates invade their industry or create a new one? This is their dilemma: fight the pirates or learn from them.
From the nun who inspired Disco to Taki 183, modern street art, branding, punks, PCs and pirate-radio, come to understand how the pirates of yesterday have shaped today and how the youth of today may shape tomorrow. One of the best books I’ve ever read on social forces, culture and branding. We can only wait to see what’s next. Enjoy.
Up next: “The Art of Power” by Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Buddhist Zen master, poet, scholar, and peace activist.

I think you’ll enjoy the Thich Nhat Hanh book. I haven’t read that particular one, but have read a few of his others and the message is quite consistent throughout. Great post by the way.
